Choosing a seat cushion for a long flight

A useful airplane seat cushion needs to suit your seat, your preferred firmness and the bag you travel with. Start with those practical checks before choosing a material or a bundle.

What if the airplane seat feels too firm?

A seat cushion adds another layer between you and the seat. With an inflatable design, you can vary that layer by adding or releasing air. Relvie Air Cell has 24 raised air cells, a built-in pump and a release valve. Try a gradual adjustment rather than assuming a fully firm cushion will feel best.

Will a 44 × 44 cm cushion fit an airplane seat?

Air Cell's listed footprint is 44 × 44 cm. Compare that with the usable surface of your seat, including the space between armrests. The published width of an airline seat may be measured differently from the usable cushion surface. Fit also changes with seat shape and inflation.

Check that you can sit securely and use the seat belt normally. Follow the airline's rules and crew instructions. We do not claim that a single cushion fits every airline, aircraft or seat.

Can I pack it in a carry-on?

Air Cell deflates between uses, which reduces its bulk for packing. Compare your packed cushion and other belongings with your airline's current baggage allowance. The inflated footprint is not a packed-size measurement.

The separate Relvie Travel Carry Case has a listed external size of 23 × 23 × 13 cm. External size does not tell you the usable interior capacity; check the fit of your fully deflated and folded item.

Is air, gel or memory foam better for a flight?

Choose by the features you need. Air Cell offers adjustable firmness and deflation. HoneyCore needs no inflation and has an open gel grid. U-Cutout has a contoured memory-foam seat and raised back. There is no one comfort result for every traveler. Use the side-by-side cushion comparison to check the differences.

What if I want cushioning behind my lower back?

A cushion under your seat and a pillow behind your lower back serve different positions. The Relvie Travel Lumbar Cushion is a separate inflatable lower-back pillow. It uses TPU and elastic cloth, and the listed size is 66 × 16 × 9 cm, varying with inflation. Check both fit and seating position if you use more than one cushion.

What comes with Relvie Air Cell?

The single-cushion offer includes one cushion and one eye mask. The carry case is an optional paid add-on for that offer. The two-cushion offer displayed on the product page includes two cushions, two carry cases, two eye masks and the travel-hacks ebook. Review your selected offer and cart before checkout.

Air Cell and the separately listed Relvie Travel Cushion use the same cushion design. Their offers can differ, so compare price and included items on the current product pages.

Can a cushion guarantee comfort for the whole flight?

No. How a cushion feels depends on your body, the seat, the air level and the duration of sitting. It is a comfort accessory, and it does not guarantee pain relief.

Before you leave

  • Check the cushion on a seat before packing it.
  • Practice using the pump and release valve.
  • Check your airline's current seat and baggage information.
  • Keep the cushion away from sharp objects in your bag.
